We recently committed to teaming up with local non-profit organisation TREE (Training and Resources in Early Education). TREE'S vision is to ensure that young children develop into their full potential, in line with their rights and needs. Statistics show that 85% of children under 5, in KZN, do not have access to early childhood development. We are devoted to partnering with their vision by identifying several 'HUBS of EXCELLENCE' whereby Lake, Smit and Partners can support skills programmes, promote nutrition, build toys and encourage early learning through play.
There are currently 4 TREE centres and 27 training sites across KZN, which support over 1400 Early Childhood Development (EDC) sites. To date, they have reached more than 52000 children, trained 1424 EDC practitioners and built 7 toy libraries in 2 years. Bravo!
The result of our relationship with TREE has been outstanding - not only are our staff having fun and appreciate being a part of our Community and Social Investment, but many also felt personally encouraged and see this as a rewarding experience. Some of the activites they enjoyed include:
In support of Breast Cancer awareness month, Lake, Smit and Partners donate a percentage of all mammography examination fees done in October to dedicated organisations involved in the care and support of breast cancer patients. By sowing directly back into our community, we believe we are making a difference in the fight against Breast Cancer.
One of our chosen charities, Reach for Recovery work throughout the year promoting breast cancer awareness and the importance of early detection through regular self-examination, mammography and screening. The donation enables them to expand their service, and offer sponsored mammograms for less fortunate women who are high risk. In 2017 alone, their campaigns reached over 5600 patients!
Highway Hospice, our other chosen charity, needs no introduction. They tirelessly provide palliative care for patients with advanced, incurable terminal illness in the final stages of life. They promote patients with a better quality of life and comfort - not only physically, but emotionally, socially, practically, intellectually and spiritually too.
